Newsmaker(s) of the Year 2024

Demagogues and Sheeple

If it bleeds it leads but never discount the sheeple’s appetite for pure bullshit (and/or our cats and dogs). Yes 2024 will be remembered as the year of the above-mentioned demagogues and the sheeple they fleeced.

Newsmaker of the Year 2023

Mother Nature

As if a conflict that’s as old as the bible was not enough, Mom served us up a  fire and brimstone chaser.  Everything everywhere was heating up and spilling, if not boiling over.

The good news for those of us who aspire to become too sexy for our planet, everyone got hotter last year as 2023’s global average air temperature made it the warmest year ever recorded while the world’s oceans also experienced their highest temperature in recorded history.  All of this occurred while Canada was experiencing  another new record wildfire season (an event that’s it is nothing new; therefore, hardly newsworthy, but for the fact that it’s now sparking tension, if not an international incident, south of the border). And those that managed to survive the frying pan and the fire found themselves (if they were lucky, only) hip deep in water with the worst floods on record (outside of the bible) in Libya (11000+ dead), China (worst rainfall in 142 years), Australia (worst of the century, Nova Scotia (3 months of rainfall in 1 day), and Noah telling how many others.

Runner Up:    Artificial Intelligence

Finally, a news maker upper that is more reliable than Repubnican America’s Liar-in-Chief (but the jury is still out on which of the two is potentially more dangerous)

Newsmaker(s) of the Year 2022

The Ukrainian People

The Ukrainians represent a beacon of hope and an example for the rest of us. The next time you find yourself hard done by and surrendering to whatever real or perceived woes you are dealing with, turn on the news, take look at Ukraine, buck up, and fight back. The Ukrainians are the most courageous Russian speaking people on the planet. That’s right Putin. You and your country of Russian serfs who have surrendered to your yoke of oppression without a fight are spineless pussies by comparison.

Runner Up: Iranian Women

Another courageous group of people who are fighting like hell against an authoritarian, nationalistic, psycopathy in order to change their world for the better.

Newsmaker of the Year 2021

Mother Nature

Mother Nature continued to trend toward the extreme over the past year. Arctic Temperatures in Texas. Mediterranean temperatures in the Arctic. Record  rainfalls and flooding in Canada’s wettest province. Record Heatwaves (July 2021 was the “world’s” hottest month on record). Oh, and don’t forget the Record droughts, the killer tornadoes appearing later (in December?!) and touching down for longer than ever before, and the host of other natural disasters super-spreading across the globe.  Alas, Earth’s ultimate influencer, is still  no match for the ongoing cacophony of gorilla dust being raised by the climate denial movement with their army of online influencers, trolls, and lobbyists who will continue to punch well above their weight class until the day they climb (or are flooded) out of their parents’ basements, caves and/or arseholes into what may well be their first (and last) taste of life in the “real” world. Until that day, there is Noah telling what it’s going to take to drown those guys out.

Experts confirm that an arctic town in Siberia now holds, at 38C (100F), the highest temperature ever recorded in the Arctic.

Brazil, land of the free to cut, burn and lay waste to the Amazon rain forests (a.k.a. the Lungs of Earth) was reporting that their Covid-19 death toll is being exacerbated by a lack of oxygen.

Newsmaker of the Year

Elon Musk

Elon seemed to be the only serial headliner who was making news as opposed to noise in 2018 and, at least “some” of those stories were centered on what he was doing today to push the envelope with real and progressive actions intent on a better future for mankind (excuse me too) personkind. Following our Story of the Year, who can blame him if one of his bigger news launches might have been his first step on a plan to flee earth for what might soon be a better life on a more habitable planet called Mars.
