Movie of the Year 2023
Sisu starring nobody you know
Action speaks louder than words in this Nobody and Quentin Tarantino meet the Nazis flick that is a lot further along the red spectrum than Barbie with a protagonist that is just about as dangerous as anything Oppenheimer ever created. It might also be the only movie released last year that we didn’t have to take at least one hell deserved vacation away from before plowing on to its eventual end.
Honourable Mention: Hypnotic starring Ben Affleck
A welcome departure from Hollywood’s ubiquitous Groundhog Day movie genre that is the deepest that any sane individual (and/or me and my voices) should ever want to venture down that rabid hole.

Nobody
Absolutely nobody did it better than Nobody in 2022. Technically this movie was released in 2021 but since few if any people were able to see it in the theatres and it has still not been released on any streaming service, nobody is likely to challenge our choice (but if you do, don’t call us, take it up with Nobody… if you think you can).
Honourable Mention: Bullet Train
Kill Bill meets Snakes on Plane. A wild ride!

From the Archive: (Best Movie that I saw for the first time this year): Idiocracy
If you haven’t seen the movie Idiocracy, you probably won’t unless you have access to the Disney Channel. In the event you don’t have the latter, here is a synopsis (Spoiler Alert): (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=522T2axRBcU.) From what I am seeing today, the only thing it got wrong was the year. Forget 500 years into the future, we’re almost there now!

Movie of the Year 2021
Don’t Look Up
Best described as Borat’s Subsequent Movie Film meets Bruce Willis’s Armageddon. This is not only the Movie of the Year, but also the movie the best captures the world we were living in over the course of 2021. If you don’t see you and everyone you know somewhere in this movie, you haven’t been paying attention (to 2021).
Honourable Mention: Untold Crime and Penalties: Slap Shot meets The Sopranos in this Netflix documentary. The true story of the Danbury Trashers, a semipro hockey team owned and operated by a mobster. Even if you don’t like hockey (or mobsters) you are probably going to like this flick.

Movie of the Year 2020
Death to 2020: This mockumentary from the creators of Black Mirror seems to corroborate some of what me and my voices have dismembered. It might be the best thing to come out of 2020 since those of you who might prefer to opt out of reading our tome won’t need to wait for the movie.
Honourable Mention:
Just Grace: True stories are better than nothing, and this one pays appropriate homage to one of the tragic subplots of 2020.
Bombshell: Not sure how FOX reported this story that was not fake (i.e. also based on a true story). A real looker that should have you saying, me too, I liked it (unless you are one of the bad guys).

Movie of the Year 2019
Movie of the Year: No Winner (that I have seen)
Honourable Mention: American Factory
I stumbled onto this documentary by accident. A different kind of (culture) shock and awe, it’s an unbiased depiction of what is going on in the world today and what the future might have to look like.

Movie of the Year 2018
Movie of the Year: Green Book
A tough Italian-American bouncer reluctantly agrees to drive an African-American classical pianist on his 1962 musical tour of the segregated Southern United States. What could go wrong there? This unique and excellent period piece based on true events stood out from a field that was packed with all the usual re-makes, sequels and franchise formula flicks.

Movie of the Year 2017
The Hitman’s Bodyguard
Action that just keeps on coming with a just enough comedy to make it surreal. Fun (but only for that part of the family that is hip to the fact that motherf#@..! is just a quaint figure of speech).
Honorable Mention:
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle: One for the whole family.
Cries from Syria: A documentary that actually explains the inexplicable

Movie of the Year 2016
Movie of the Year: Hacksaw Ridge
A war movie whose hero is saving lives as opposed to taking them. Caveat Exempt Her! The movie opens with a touching romantic subplot; however, over 20,000 Americans died at Okinawa and only 7,000 of its 106,000 Japanese defenders survived. Hacksaw Ridge is extremely graphic and perhaps the goriest movie I have ever seen. The Japanese Army’s suicidal defense of Okinawa was a contributing factor leading to America’s decision to use atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Honorable mention:
Food Choices: A little documentary with an important message. First choose to watch this doc and then decide what you can do today to: 1) save yourself; 2) save your money; and 3) save the planet. Alternatively you can choose the status quo (to trust the Food Processing Industry and the Big Drug profiteers to continue look out for you, your money and your planet).
13th: The 13th amendment to the American constitution abolished slavery except as a punishment for a crime. This is a convincing documentary about how that caveat was and is being exploited in support of the continued enslavement of African Americans.

Over half (29) of the top 50 movies at the box office in 2016 were either remakes or sequels of previous franchises.

Movie of the Year 2015
In another year dedicated to remakes, sequels and blatant cash grabs in the form of final instalments of bestselling trilogies that were arbitrarily split into parts, this was a different, entertaining and semi-serious spy spoof.
